Finally back to blogging - apologies to anyone who actually follows this blog. Been spending my days painting - but not the stuff of an arty type - just finished painting a house inside and out and finally I am starting to have a life again....
Christchurch tram - tried to describe it abstractly and attempted a new technique of collage over the top of a drawing. I wanted to capture some of the emotion I'm feeling about central city - trams are running but it still feels far from buzzing in town. New life is starting but it's a bit hazy as to what things will look like yet. All a bit messy still.
Technique wise - I put down a drawing and then layered collage over it with both opaque and translucent papers and then brought back the elements of the drawing at the end by inking over the drawing where I felt it needed to be strengthened.

Another blog's theme for this year is using the alphabet - I have some catch up home work to do as the letter 'D' I have currently done I don't like, which means a redo!
Sometimes it's great to have a starting off point to go from so I've decided to try for a botanical theme with decorative letters.art alivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03666270332993202057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3280517344370160923.post-20323711451125485702014-03-25T17:34:00.003-07:002014-03-25T17:34:58.240-07:00Strathmore 2014 homework week 2 completed

Just in case you don't know, Strathmore have a free tutorial/workshop that is great. Found it a bit hard to get onto the site but the nice lady at Strathmore fixed it up and I can now access the classes.
Having a window of opportunity with older family members at a drama production and littler ones in bed early, I finally got a chance to attempt the homework.
Nine hours on a bus trip. I definitely needed to do something to break the boredom! Apart from endless sketches of sheep, hedges and cattle, there were 5 minute sketching opportunities now and again - it was a great challenge as whether I had finished or not the bus was moving on - no completeness here - just a general idea.
This was from the bus stop at Timaru.art alivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03666270332993202057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3280517344370160923.post-10704908959890708712013-10-08T13:04:00.003-07:002013-10-08T13:04:44.902-07:00sketchcrawl 2013Sketchcrawl.
A bit of urban sketching - i.e. not relying on my camera and getting something down in the sketch book in public. Still a challenge but fortunately Table Talk cafe was slightly deserted early morning and the coffee was excellent. Got this down very roughly in about 20 minutes as I ran into a new friend and it would have been rude to keep drawing!art alivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03666270332993202057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3280517344370160923.post-10140425110067202142013-07-23T22:42:00.003-07:002013-07-24T22:07:45.988-07:00Frugal stamping idea

For those of you with access to anchor products (go New Zealand made!) their containers often have anchors that are 3 dimensional and so make excellent little stamps. I just cut a square of plastic around the stamp to make a square shaped print. A technique that works well is stamping on tissue and then attaching the tissue onto whatever you are working on with gel medium or PVA glue (if you want the stamp to be semi- transparent). Happy stamping!art alivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03666270332993202057noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3280517344370160923.post-37934514382889432022013-07-21T21:25:00.001-07:002013-07-21T21:26:27.019-07:00Art Journaling Practice

Dina Wakly's "Art Journal Freedom" tutorial book has been fabulous. This is a practice exercise from the book. Finally creating some art journaling that I love.art alivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03666270332993202057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3280517344370160923.post-37132705055938123762013-06-05T16:33:00.001-07:002013-06-05T16:33:17.427-07:00SuppliesWell, I have just bought a new pentel waterbrush having searched some of the supplies of bloggers I follow and am so looking forward to having it on hand - I am still very self conscious about using my paints while out and I'm thinking this will help (discretely tipping some of my water bottle's contents into my palette is always tricky) having never heard of them before it will be interesting to see what they are like and how much I actually use them.art alivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03666270332993202057noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3280517344370160923.post-1839456220618319682013-06-04T15:30:00.000-07:002013-06-04T15:30:00.257-07:00May's sketchbook challenge complete

Glad I gave it a try - makes me aware that there is always a few minutes to sketch and even if the outcome is not great I will learn to capture ideas and what works or not for me.art alivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03666270332993202057noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3280517344370160923.post-92116253033543476172013-05-23T14:25:00.001-07:002013-05-23T14:25:00.204-07:00McLean's Mansion, Manchester Street

McLean's Mansion, Manchester Street, a photo by 1artalive on Flickr.

art alivehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03666270332993202057noreply@blogger.com0
